Today happens to be my 22nd wedding anniversary. And, it's a Saturday, a day typically spent getting things done around the house like cleaning and laundry. But, since it's my 22nd wedding anniversary, my husband and I have made alternative plans.
However, the one thing we have learned by being married for over two decades is to be flexible.
Yesterday, I came home after having lost the battle of fighting off whatever nasty bug has been making it's way around my middle school. When I arrived home yesterday at 2:45, and was in bed by 3 pm, I knew today's plans were iffy at best.
Still hopeful, I woke up and gave it my best shot, but quickly realized that today would be a day best spent pushing fluids and resting. Whatever is attacking our immunity systems at my school is hitting hard - my co-teacher was out all week and several students have had at least 4 days out this week as well. One day this week, I had over 15 students out!
Even though I couldn't make it any further than my couch, I still decided to get at least a lit bit done today. Earlier last week, I introduced my students to a math game called Conquest by Math Giraffe. The particular game we played was using the Finding Slope Cards, and my accelerated students loved it. Initially they were a bit hesitant on how to play, but once they got the concept of the game, they were able to practice the skill in an engaging way. So, today, I decided to at least print sets for a few more games that Math Giraffe has created. They still need to be laminated (best purchase ever = a personal laminator) and cutout. I hope to show my on grade level class how to play using the one-step equation cards this coming week (provided, I can kick this illness to the curb).
So, today, my life as a teacher has been surrendering to my immunity system and letting it take charge to get rid of whatever nastiness I was able to pick up from my middle school students over the past week while doing a tad bit of school work & postponing my wedding anniversary plans until hopefully next weekend.
